Older Australians: Protect Yourselves with Free Vaccinationsby Terri Deno
People that are 65 and older should consider taking advantage of the annual free influenza shots so that they can take steps in order to protect themselves from illness that could turn life threatening. According to last year’s statistics, more than 2.5 million people over the age of 65 went to their GPs or clinics to receive their flue shots. Because 2.5 percent of all deaths in the country in the last five years were from influenza and pneumonia related conditions, it is an important step in preventing an unnecessary death. Older people throughout the country need to take advantage of this free service. It only takes moments to get the shot and it can save people, especially those who are older, a lot of trouble with illnesses and complications throughout the winter season. Recently, the Amabassador for Ageing, Noeline Brown, sent an example for all older Australians by getting her flu shot from a local GP in Petersham. The message that the government is trying to get out is not just about getting your shot this year. It is about reminding people to get their flue shots every single year in order to protect themselves against the most recent forms of the flue virus. The reason that the campaign is focused toward older Australians is that flu is more serious for the older age groups. The flu in not necessarily what is the most harmful, but contracting the flu can lead to other more serious complications like pneumonia. The flu also complicates preexisting conditions like heart conditions, diabetes, and severe asthma. These complications can lead to serious problems and hospitalization. But the government is trying to prevent this by offering the vaccinations free of charge for anyone that is over 65 years of age. The government has provided more than $26 million for the flu vaccination program. People getting the vaccinations should also remember to get the shots early in the fall. This way, you can get vaccinated before the more common flu outbreaks occur in the colder months. The vaccine will need to a little time to work in your body before being exposed to the flu, so get the shot early. The vaccination is safe for most and since it doesn’t cost a thing for older people, there is no reason to skip this year’s flu shot. Make sure you go to your GP or local clinic and get your flu shot before the flu season begins.
